BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Coming in 2013 for $200,000

The automaker’s sales and marketing director, Ian Robertson, announced that the car will cost roughly €150,000, or about $200,000 USD when it goes on sale in 2013.

BMW is set to change the way we think about supercars with its Vision EfficientDynamics supercar concept. This economical supercar is estimated to produce around 328 horsepower from its three-cylinder dieselhybrid powertrain, and fuel economy is claimed to be a lofty 62.5 miles per gallon.

BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics supercar is the new breed of high performance. With a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) intensive VED will “redefine how we look at high-performance sports cars” said Ian Robertson, BMW Sales andMarketing Director.

At the official launch of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, Robertson announced that the car would be less than 150,000 pounds or about $200,000 USD when it goes on sale.

That is a decent savings over the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell, which is rumored to cost around $250.000, when it arrives in 2012.
The EfficientDynamics’ vehicle is powered by a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine supported by two electric motors. It has a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour (250mph) and can do 0-100 kilometers per hour (0-60mph) in 4.8 seconds.
Where the vehicle really excels is in its emissions output. While running on diesel, the vehicle has a consumption of 3.76 litres per 100 kilometers or around 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

The vehicle’s lithium-polymer rechargeable battery is housed centrally in a longitudinal chassis element and is said to be fully rechargable from a conventional power socket in just 2.5 hours.
When being powered solely from the batteries the vehicle can run emission free for up to 50 km (31 miles), while the range can be extended an extra 650 km (404 miles) thanks to the 24-liter diesel tank.
No official release date has been given as to when we’ll see the debut of the production-ready EfficientDynamics supercar, but Inside Line states that BMW is sponsoring the 2012 London Olympics, so we should look for the car to debut at that time.
