University of Twente Scholarship 2027: Up to €22,000 for International Master’s Students

International students looking to pursue a Master’s degree in the Netherlands can apply for the University of Twente Scholarship (UTS), a competitive funding opportunity designed for outstanding students from non-EU/EEA countries.

For the 2027–2028 academic year, successful applicants can receive between €3,000 and €22,000 for one year of study at the University of Twente. The application deadline is 1 April 2027.

Who can apply?

The University of Twente Scholarship is intended for academically excellent students from outside the European Union and European Economic Area who have applied for an eligible Master’s programme at the University of Twente.

The scholarship is highly competitive. Candidates are expected to rank among approximately the top 5–10% of their graduating class at their home university.

Applicants must first apply for admission to a qualifying Master’s programme and receive a conditional or provisional admission letter. The scholarship application is a separate procedure.

Scholarship value: up to €22,000

The UTS provides financial support ranging from €3,000 to €22,000 for one year, depending on the scholarship awarded.

The funding is intended as compensation for study-related costs. Students decide how to use the scholarship, and the university does not directly pay tuition fees or other expenses on behalf of the recipient.

Applicants should carefully calculate the total cost of studying and living in the Netherlands before applying, as the UTS is not a full scholarship.

Funding for two-year Master’s programmes

Students enrolled in a two-year Master’s programme may be eligible to receive an additional scholarship for their second year, equivalent to the amount awarded in the first year.

However, continuation is conditional on meeting the University of Twente’s requirements.

At the end of the third quartile of the first year, students must have:

• An average grade of at least 7.0 out of 10;
• Completed at least 50% of the European Credits required for the programme.

The scholarship does not cover Master’s programmes offered by the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC).

Additional scholarship opportunity

Students applying for programmes beginning in September 2027 may also be considered for the Kipaji Scholarship, provided they first apply for the University of Twente Scholarship and meet the additional eligibility criteria.

Main eligibility requirements

Applicants must meet all of the University of Twente’s scholarship requirements.

Candidates must:

• Be provisionally or conditionally admitted to an eligible UT Master’s programme starting in September 2027;
• Have a University of Twente student number;
• Not have previously graduated from a University of Twente undergraduate or graduate programme;
• Meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa for the Netherlands, where applicable;
• Meet the English-language requirements, including IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90, with the required speaking subscore;
• Not be eligible for a Dutch study loan;
• Be among approximately the top 5–10% of students in their graduating class.

The scholarship is not available to Dutch or current University of Twente students, EU/EEA students, or students paying the statutory tuition fee.

It is also unavailable for pre-Master programmes.

Important: admission comes first

One of the most important points for applicants is that the scholarship application cannot replace the academic admission process.

Students must first apply for their chosen Master’s programme. After receiving a conditional or provisional admission letter and obtaining their student number, they can submit a separate University of Twente Scholarship application.

The university notes that the admission process can take up to eight weeks, so prospective students should plan ahead.

Applications for the 2027–2028 intake follow this schedule:

Application opens: 15 October 2026 at 09:00 CET

Application deadline: 1 April 2027 at 16:00 CET

Expected scholarship results: First week of May 2027

Only one UT scholarship can be awarded to an applicant.

The University of Twente advises prospective students to calculate their complete study and living costs before applying.

Because the UTS is not a full scholarship, recipients must be able to cover costs that remain after the scholarship is taken into account, including tuition fees and living expenses where applicable.
