USDA Internship Program Opens Applications for Spring 2027 Cohort
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is inviting applications for its Volunteer Internship Program, offering young people and emerging leaders an opportunity to gain practical professional experience while contributing to the department’s work supporting farmers, rural communities, food systems and America’s natural resources.
The Spring 2027 cohort will run from January 25 through April 30, 2027. Applicants must be available throughout the internship period.
A Public Service and Leadership Experience
The USDA Internship Program is designed as both a public-service opportunity and a leadership-development experience. Interns receive hands-on assignments and mentorship while gaining a deeper understanding of federal service and the work of the Department of Agriculture.
Depending on their assigned office and mission area, interns may contribute to projects involving:
- Research and information gathering
- Program operations
- Data analysis
- Communications and drafting materials
- Public and community outreach
- Stakeholder engagement
- Other projects supporting USDA programs and priorities
Interns also participate in department-wide programming, including lunch-and-learn sessions featuring USDA leaders and subject-matter experts.
Is the USDA Internship Paid?
No. USDA internships are unpaid.
Applicants are encouraged to explore possible financial support through their educational institutions or relevant nonprofit organizations. Outside income, funding or housing assistance received during the internship may require prior approval.
What Are the Internship Hours?
Most internships follow a Monday–Friday schedule, generally between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Some flexibility may be available for academic or program requirements. Interns seeking full-time status are generally expected to work the equivalent of 4.5 days per week, with limited adjustments when appropriate.
Where Is the Internship Located?
The USDA Internship Program is an in-person opportunity in Washington, D.C.
Interns are expected to work onsite at the USDA Whitten Building, where they can collaborate directly with USDA employees and participate in the department’s daily operations.
Remote participation is not offered.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants do not have to be currently enrolled students or college graduates.
According to the program requirements, applicants must:
- Be U.S. citizens
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of application
- Be available for the entire Spring 2027 internship period
- Demonstrate a commitment to public service and the USDA mission
The program welcomes applicants with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds.
Is Political Preference Considered?
No. Political preference is not a factor in the application review process.
Applicants should, however, demonstrate a commitment to the mission and values of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, including service to farmers, rural communities and the American public.
Housing and Relocation
USDA does not provide dedicated intern housing.
Interns are responsible for arranging and paying for their own housing during the program. The internship also does not provide housing or relocation assistance.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit their applications through the official online application portal. USDA does not accept hard-copy applications.
Applicants are required to provide at least two references who can speak about their qualifications, character and commitment to public service.

Application Deadline
Applications for the Spring 2027 USDA Internship Program must be submitted by November 13, 2026.
Because applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, candidates are encouraged to submit their materials as early as possible. Late submission of required application materials, including reference information, may negatively affect an application.
