University of Toronto Offers Full Four-Year Scholarship to Outstanding International Students

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship provides exceptional international students with full financial support for four years of undergraduate study at the University of Toronto. Applications for students beginning their studies in September 2027 are now open for the 2026–2027 selection cycle.

For ambitious students from around the world, studying at one of Canada’s leading universities can come with a significant financial cost. The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship offers an opportunity to remove much of that financial barrier while joining an international community of high-achieving students and future leaders.

The scholarship is described by the University of Toronto as its most prestigious award for international students. It recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, creativity and leadership potential, as well as a commitment to making a positive contribution to the global community.

A Full Four-Year Scholarship

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship is among Canada’s most competitive scholarship programs for international students.

Successful Pearson Scholars receive financial support covering:

  • Tuition fees
  • Books
  • Incidental fees
  • Full residence support
  • Four years of undergraduate study

The program provides this support for the full four-year duration of an undergraduate degree, making it one of the most substantial scholarship opportunities available to international students seeking to study in Canada.

According to the University of Toronto, the program selected 37 scholars annually, with more than $12 million in funding in 2024. Pearson Scholars come from a highly diverse international community, with students representing 188 countries.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship is designed specifically for international students entering undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto.

To be eligible for the 2027 intake, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an international student, meaning a non-Canadian student who requires a study permit to study in Canada.
  • Be enrolled in the final year of senior secondary school during the 2026–2027 academic year, or have graduated from secondary school no earlier than June 2026.
  • Be beginning undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto in September 2027.

Students who are already attending post-secondary studies are not eligible for the Pearson International Scholarship.

Students who begin post-secondary studies in January 2027, either at the University of Toronto or another post-secondary institution, are also excluded from the program.

Students Must Be Nominated by Their High School

One of the most important aspects of the Pearson Scholarship is that students cannot simply apply independently.

Candidates must first be nominated by their current secondary school.

Each participating high school can nominate only one student per year, making the nomination process highly competitive.

Students should therefore contact their guidance counsellor, principal or head of school as early as possible to determine whether their school is eligible to participate.

Schools that have previously participated in the Pearson program will receive access to the nomination form beginning July 6, 2026.

The deadline for schools to nominate a student is:

October 9, 2026

Schools that have not previously participated can apply to join the program by noon Eastern Time on October 9, 2026.

Applicants Must Also Apply to the University of Toronto

Being nominated by a high school is only the first stage.

Pearson Scholarship candidates must also apply for admission to at least one undergraduate program at the University of Toronto and must intend to begin their studies in September 2027.

The deadline to submit the University of Toronto undergraduate admission application and be considered for the Pearson Scholarship is:

October 16, 2026

Applicants can apply to up to three areas of study as part of their University of Toronto admission application.

However, if a student receives the Pearson Scholarship, the award will be restricted to the student’s top-choice program at the time scholarship decisions are made.

The Final Pearson Scholarship Application

Once a student has been nominated by their secondary school and has submitted an application for admission to the University of Toronto, they will receive a private link to complete the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship application.

The final scholarship application must be completed and all required documentation submitted by:

November 6, 2026

This means prospective applicants should begin preparing well before the deadlines.

Students should speak with their schools about nomination procedures, research undergraduate programs at the University of Toronto and make sure they have enough time to prepare a strong scholarship application.

What Does the University Look For?

Academic excellence is an important part of the selection process, but the Pearson Scholarship is not simply an award for students with the highest grades.

The University of Toronto says Pearson Scholars demonstrate:

  • Exceptional academic achievement
  • Creativity
  • Leadership potential
  • The ability to contribute positively to the global community

The program is therefore aimed at students who have demonstrated more than academic performance. Candidates are expected to show the potential to become influential members of their communities and contribute to positive change.

Beware of Scholarship Scams

The University of Toronto has also issued a fraud warning concerning the Pearson Scholarship.

The university has been alerted to fraudulent emails and offers from individuals claiming to assist students with applications or scholarship opportunities.

The University of Toronto states that the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship program does not work with agencies or educational agents to recruit students or offer scholarships.

Students should be particularly cautious if someone:

  • Promises a guaranteed scholarship;
  • Offers a false university acceptance;
  • Requests payment for a scholarship application;
  • Requests fees for an unaffiliated third party;
  • Claims to represent the Pearson Scholarship program without official university authorization.

Pearson Scholarship recipients can only be nominated by their current secondary school through the official online process, and the scholarship is available only to applicants seeking undergraduate degrees.

A Major Opportunity for Future Global Leaders

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship represents a significant opportunity for talented international students who want to pursue an undergraduate education in Canada without carrying the full financial burden of tuition and residence costs.

With only 37 scholars selected annually, competition is intense. Students interested in the program should therefore begin preparing early, particularly because the first critical step is securing a nomination from their secondary school.

For students who combine strong academic performance with leadership, creativity and a demonstrated desire to make a difference, the Pearson Scholarship could provide a pathway to four years of study at the University of Toronto and membership in a global community of exceptional young leaders.

Students and schools should rely on the official University of Toronto scholarship information for the latest eligibility requirements, application procedures and deadlines.
