JOB VACANCY: SECRETARY GENERAL

The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is looking for a SECRETARY GENERAL

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Political leadership
    • Effective representation of the EEB in high-level fora
    • Building and maintaining of good lines of communication with key decisionmakers in the EU institutions, regional and global organisations, and with other strategic partners
    • Mobilisation of staff and members in pursuit of the strategic goals and policies of the organisation
  • Organisational management
    • Accountability to the Board and General Assembly for implementation of the Long-Term Strategy as well as the annual work programme and management of the budget
    • Managerial oversight of the EEB staff body, including recruitment, supervision, appraisal and motivation of staff and effective delegation
    • Oversight of financial and project/programme management
    • Ensuring that the structures and processes within the organisation are kept under review and remain fit for purpose, especially in the light of organisational growth
  • Policy oversight
    • Ability to contribute to and draw on policy expertise for political advocacy and communication
    • Formulation or approval of policy proposals for adoption by the Board or General Assembly, e.g. within draft annual work programmes
    • Resolution of policy dilemmas, especially on high-level, horizontal or interface issues
    • Judgment calls in reaction to unfolding events
  • Communication
    • Role as lead spokesperson for the EEB in high-level contexts and on horizontal topics
    • Upholding of transparent and effective communication norms, both within the organisation and externally
    • Outreach to current and potential partners to maintain and strengthen relationships
  • Membership engagement
    • Accessibility, visibility and responsiveness to member organisations
    • Effective servicing of the General Assembly, Board and other governance bodies
    • Appreciation for the breadth and diversity of the EEB’s membership
  • Fundraising
    • Engagement with existing and potential donors
    • Overseeing of fundraising strategy to consolidate and diversify funding sources

QUALITIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE 

The successful candidate should have most of the following qualities, skills or experience:

  • At least 15 years of relevant work experience, of which ideally at least 10 years in leadership roles
  • Higher academic qualifications in a relevant field
  • Demonstrable environmental commitment
  • Creative, progressive thinker with strategic vision, broad policy knowledge and astute political judgment
  • Ability to see the big picture whilst having an eye for detail and translate an ambitious vision into achievable policy objectives
  • Advanced understanding and experience of EU and international environment-related policies and decision-making processes
  • Strong operational planning and prioritisation skills, ability to delegate effectively and fairly and to balance consultative and authoritative approaches
  • An eloquent, persuasive, diplomatic, media-savvy communicator in different contexts, ranging from high-level conferences through TV interviews to bilateral meetings with key decision-makers
  • Excellent written and spoken English, fluency in other languages widely spoken in the region an asset
  • Ability to build respectful, productive working relationships with people from different cultures and backgrounds
  • Friendly motivating personality, supportive empathic listener, emotionally intelligent, facilitative, instinctive networker
  • Extensive experience in fundraising
  • Extensive existing network of relevant contacts an asset
  • Good command of social media an asset

JOB VACANCY: CHEMICALS POLICY OFFICER

The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is looking for a Chemicals Policy Officer

The European Environmental Bureau is the largest and most inclusive European network of environmental citizens’ groups – and the only one that works on such a broad range of issues. We advocate for progressive policies to create a better environment in the European Union and beyond.

The Chemicals Policy Officer will join our Chemicals Policy team, part of the EEB’s EU Policy Unit. The successful candidate will work in a highly motivated team to build a non-toxic environment. The candidate will contribute to the revision of the REACH and CLP regulations and contribute to the regulation of hazardous chemicals through the implementation of REACH and CLP. The Policy Officer will report to the Policy Manager of the Chemicals Policy team.

The work consists of:

  • Providing technical input to the regulation of chemicals under REACH and CLP, including restriction proposals and authorisation applications
  • Representing the EEB at technical and scientific committees, including the European Chemicals Agency Risk Assessment Committee and Socioeconomic Assessment Committee and other relevant expert working groups
  • Coordinating (technical and political) input to public consultations on the regulation of chemicals with EEB members and NGO networks as well as with academia and other stakeholders
  • Providing technical and scientific input to EEB reports and position papers
  • Contributing to fundraising, applications and reporting exercises.

Qualities and experiences:

  • A relevant academic degree in the field of science or environmental policies
  • Understanding of the EU chemicals regulatory processes
  • At least three years of experience in environmental policy work, including participation in technical and /or scientific committees. Knowledge and experience in socio economic assessment is an asset
  • Good communications, organisational and networking skills
  • Confidence in interacting with colleagues, other NGOs, industry and authorities
  • Experience in using on-line communication tools
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently and as part of a team
  • Quick learner and motivated to go deeper into issues in view of finding solutions
  • Able to deliver accurate, high quality work on time and meet deadlines
  • Fluent in English
  • Availability to travel
  • Fundraising and project management skills considered as an asset
  • Shares the core values of the EEB and can demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to environmental protection and social change.

The EEB offers:

  • A monthly pre-tax salary in the range of 2.700 – 3.290 Euros/month depending on experience, plus benefits (holiday bonus, 13th month, pension scheme, luncheon vouchers)

The candidate must commit to being officially registered in Belgium and working most of the time from our office in Brussels (due to the pandemic this currently entails a maximum occupancy for the office with a largely work from home in Belgium arrangement)

JOB VACANCY: Human Resources Assistant (CIP Internship)

The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is looking for a Human Resources Assistant (Paid internship based on a CIP – convention d’immersion professionnelle contract)

The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is looking to recruit an HR assistant (CIP internship) to work closely with colleagues in our Finance and Administration Unit. We are looking for a highly motivated self-starter, eager to learn and contribute to the EEB’s work. The position will be a 6-month to one-year paid internship contract (‘convention d’immersion professionnelle’) based in the EEB office in Brussels.

More specifically, they will:
Offer support to the Human Resources team in day-to-day operations:

  • Compiling and updating employee records
  • Archiving documents (paper and online archives)
  • Dealing with employee requests regarding human resources issues, rules, and regulations
  • Payroll preparation
  • Recruitment process
  • Keeping internship database up to date
  • Communicating with public services, external benefit vendors and payroll office
  • Developing new policies and processes
  • Taking part in different HR-related internal task forces.

Qualities and experiences required for the post:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Administration, Human Resources Management or Psychology
  • Good written and spoken English and French
  • Ability to work independently and be pro-active
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Prepared and able to work in a dynamic working environment
  • Capability to prioritise
  • Specific aptitude in MS Office is an additional asset
  • Interest / Experience in working in an environmental organisation or other public interest NGO and in an international working environment
